The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has advised Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to adopt firmer measures in dealing with individuals who, according to him, are undermining the stability of his administration.

Sanusi gave the advice during the traditional post-Sallah visit to the governor in Kano, where he spoke on leadership, authority and governance.

He said effective leadership requires both justice and firm authority, citing the Qur’an to illustrate the importance of strength in governance.

Sanusi said, “In the Holy Qur’an, after Allah mentioned messengers and holy books, He also spoke about iron, which scholars see as a symbol of power and authority. Justice cannot survive without authority and strength.”

While commending the governor for improvements in education, healthcare and social welfare programmes, the Emir warned against excessive tolerance toward individuals who may not act in good faith.

He said honouring people of good character strengthens loyalty, while misplaced respect for others could encourage arrogance and indiscipline.

Sanusi noted that some residents in Kano perceive the governor as being overly tolerant in handling disturbances in the state, a situation he said could weaken governance.

He urged Yusuf to assert greater authority, stressing that government must demonstrate control and ensure that the rule of law is respected.

Sanusi said, “My advice to you as a brother is to face this challenge and make people understand that Kano has a government. Anyone who follows the law should live peacefully, but whoever refuses should face the consequences.”

He added that public reaction during the event indicated support for a stronger approach to governance and security in the state.

The Emir also assured the governor of the continued support of the Emirate Council, stating that Kano’s progress depends on the success of the current administration.

In his response, Governor Yusuf thanked the Emir and the council for their counsel and support, while explaining the decision to cancel the Hawan Daushe procession.

He said the cancellation was necessary to prevent possible violence during the Eid celebrations.

Yusuf added, “Since Allah made me governor, I have never feared anyone except Allah,” noting that previous incidents of violence during public events informed his decision to prioritise safety and peace.
