Mavin Records founder Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has revealed that the hit 2014 song Dorobucci was inspired by a playful nickname he adopted during Tiwa Savage’s wedding in Dubai.
Speaking on the Crea8torium podcast, the music producer explained that he introduced himself to guests as “Don Dorobucci” while attending the ceremony dressed in a suit.
According to him, the name quickly became popular among guests at the event and later evolved into a social media trend after he shared a freestyle on Instagram.
“We went to Tiwa’s wedding in Dubai but then I was wearing suit and anytime I am wearing suit I just normally introduce myself to people with an Italian name,” he said.
“In this wedding, I was telling everybody I am Don Dorobucci, so Tiwa was like which one is Don Dorobucci,” he added.
Don Jazzy explained that guests repeatedly used the nickname throughout the event, which inspired him to turn it into a song.
After posting a freestyle online, he said Nigerians began participating in a dance challenge built around the phrase even before the official track was recorded.
“Then I did the freestyle on Instagram singing Dorobucci and people just started doing a challenge to it. We came back to Nigeria, I saw bunch of people doing the challenge and I just created a song to it,” he stated.
Released under Mavin Records, the song featured Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D'Prince, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello and Di'Ja.
The track went on to become one of the biggest Afrobeats songs of its era and remains popular at parties and social events years after its release.
