Nigerian singer Omawumi has argued that modern relationships are not necessarily more transactional than before, but that the nature of exchange between partners has evolved over time.

Speaking on a Pulse podcast, she said gestures of affection and reciprocity have always existed in relationships, but what people value today differs from earlier generations.

She compared earlier courtship styles, such as secondary school and university relationships marked by simple gifts like ice cream and popcorn, with present-day expectations that may include more expensive items like smartphones.

Omawumi explained that the term “transactional” is often misunderstood, stressing that mutual exchange of effort and gifts has always been part of dating dynamics.

She added that she responds to the energy of her partner, saying she makes efforts to match the level of attention and generosity she receives in a relationship.

The singer also noted that women are often perceived as passive recipients in relationships, while their own emotional and practical contributions are overlooked.

According to her, some men tend to overextend themselves in the early stages of relationships due to attraction, but consistency often fades after the initial excitement.

She emphasised that maintaining effort and emotional presence is essential for sustaining healthy relationships beyond the early stages of courtship.
